Walking Ideas
With an adult or a few friends, go for a short walk and...
Count how many birds you see. Later, create a Bird Diary where you can keep track of the different kinds of birds that live in your neighborhood, what color they are, how big they are, what they like to eat, and what time of the day you see them.
Collect some interesting stones, sticks, pinecones, acorns or leaves - later, make a display of the items you found and keep adding to it whenever you find another cool natural object.
Count how many different kinds of flowers are growing near your home. Some flowers only bloom during certain months of the year - are there any new flowers that you didn't see before?
Keep track of how the trees near your home are changing. Do they have leaves or needles? How big and what color are the leaves? Are there nuts, pinecones or acorns on the trees? Are the trees big and old, or young and small?
If you have a camera, take it with you on your walk. Take pictures of things you see along the way. Later, start a scrapbook to keep track of your walking experiences, places you've walked, who you walked with, and what you've seen.
Oakland County has parks and nature centers where you can walk with your family or friends. Visit the Parks Page to find out more! http://www.oakgov.com/parksrec/
