Here are some fun ways to increase your steps.


When you are by yourself:

  • Walk around the neighborhood, to a friend or relative's house, or to the library.
  • Practice walking on stilts or jumping on a pogo stick.
  • Play with a hacky sack or footbag.

When there are just you two:

  • Play one-on-one basketball or take turns shooting baskets.
  • Play badminton, table tennis, or tennis.
  • Play hopscotch.

When there's a bunch of you:

  • Play baseball, touch football, basketball, dodgeball, kickball, volleyball or soccer.
  • Have a race to the corner or around the block.
  • Play follow-the-leader.

When it's hot outside:

  • Wash your bike or parent's car.
  • Have a water balloon fight.

When it's cold and snowy outside:

  • Shovel the sidewalk.
  • Build a snowman, wall, fort or igloo.
  • Go ice skating, skiing or sledding.
  • Be a detective. Follow animal footprints in the snow but watch where you're going.
  • Play tag.

When you're at home:

  • Dance to the music from your favorite CD or radio station.
  • Exercise along with an exercise program on television.
  • Help clean the house by dusting, vacuuming and mopping the floors.
  • Walk to the television to change the channel.

When you're at school:

  • Walk to the bus stop.
  • Walk to school with a group of friends.
  • During recess, walk around the playground.

When you're with your parents:

  • Take an after dinner walk.
  • Do a family challenge to see who can log the most steps.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Walk around the house during commercials.
  • Ask your parents to park in the back of the parking lot.
  • Hike the trails of Oakland County.
